There shouldn't even BE any new features of this size. Beta testing is done when a product is feature complete. It should NOT be used as a simple designation of "look how far I am".
And yes while there may be a few bugfixes, there are also a googleton of new bugs often making the game all but unplayable just after a new version.

Yes, Notch was a bit premature in declaring Beta status.
So what? He's an Indie developer. He has every right to add stuff if he feels like it. The designation shouldn't stop the creative process. Besides, for all the complaints...we still play the game. If his choice of programming focus bothers you so much...stop playing. Or don't. But either way, stop complaining about it.
