is it possible to go back to the old topigraphical map style instead of the current 1 on the main website that only shows one layer.

Technically it is... but the world is around 260mb now, over double what the old map was. I tried to generate an isometric version of the map (Like the old one) and the program just wouldn't do it, crashed every time.

is this actually using topography, or just that 'Live map' thing?

Well, I was using Cartograph, and MTS, neither worked. Even just the 2D map was 40mb... >_>.
If you know of any alternative mapping programs I could try them out.

This might work, but I dont know whats all that is involved in the live mapping setup.

Just using a test map at the moment, could you please upload your terrain.png from your Minecraft.jar for me? I'm using the one from my custom pack and it looks awful when used for a live map.
(Btw, generating this map only took 7 seconds )

I'm not sure I understood if you replied, but, is the map that the website shows a live map or is it updated every, say, 3 days. Also, when I look at the website map, the south is to the right. is this done on purpose?

I will get into the habit of updating the map daily now I have the textures sorted, should take about 30 minutes - 1 hour, so if you like playing at 7AM GMT you've been warned, haha.
(And to answer your question, the current map was just a quick fix with Cartograph, wasn't too bothered with it as I was looking for a better 'live' map solution.)
EDIT: Was meant to be up at 7AM...turned into 1PM, woops .

Orc, I used Minemapper when i rendered those maps of all the biomes. If you liked those maps you could check it out, its fairly quick and adds shadows too, so that you can see elevation better etc
