I had the idea to recreate the mana beast as a wool picture in minecraft.
Since i dont want it to get destroyed, i was wondering what a zone of 112 blocks width and 126 blocks length would cost

So you just want to do some pixelart? That's cool. I like pixelart. If you need a zone for it and you promise it will will look smashing (hint: use shading) then I could give up one of my donator-zones for it. Not like I use them anyway.

On a related note: Orc, how much resources does a Classic Server (fCraft) hog?

It would be super awesome if you could do that for me!
Id like to set up the picture somewhere near orcshire so many people can find it and see it. Im planning to make it face up north so you can see it correctly on the worldmap.

This is what the picture will look like... well roughtly:

    Spoiler:

Minecraft doesent support as many colors as in this picture. Ill try my best to make it the best possible result though

That picture looks pretty doable if you use shading.

What exactly do you mean by shading. Isnt there enough shading in this picture already?

Making use of shadows (shades) to extend your color palette. Extends the range of available color by about 50-70%

Though before you start: grab an image editor (I recommend paint.net) and scale that picture down to a size that you can actually make in MC. I have my doubt whether you can put enough details (given the size restriction of SMP) in it to make it recognizable.

Lol, I thought you were totally against the idea of a classic server?

It'd use about 350MB RAM and a few percent of a CPU core, great optimization on classic. Let me know if you want it setting up ;p.

Erm i was planning to lay it down on the ground flat just BECAUSE it is larger than the limits of minecraft overworld!
Guess why i asked for such a big zone!

Are you kidding me? You damn well know that I'm primarily a Classic player.

@Nero It will be way, way too big then. You ARE going to need to scale it down to at least 25% or else it will be bigger than the 4 major cities combined. At 25% of the image you posted it will "only" be as big as Acheron.

Not quite. Acheron is about 250x250 blocks big. But ow well, i guess if its standing it will look even better, then i dont need such a mega big zone eighter and save a lot of dye and wool, though i need you to give me a tutorial on how to use shading to manipulate the colors

Ah, right. Didn't take the expansion into account. Point still stands that it would be superdupermegabig.

Frankly i wanted it this way because i was primarily wanting it to be seen well on the server map. But yeah, ill make it smaller and a standing pixelart

Hey, do what you want. While laying down has the significant disadvantage of being very, very large, consuming a giggleton of resources and only being really good to see on the map, going standing up has the (large) disadvantage of being restricted by a ridiculously small (for PA) height-limit and thus a limited detail level. So it's up to you to decide what you rather have.

Ill make it upright, can you tell or show me how to use shading for colors?

It's really easy actually. Best way is to just to demonstrate

    Spoiler:

The image consists of two separate layers. Because light doesn't fall on second layer the blocks appear way darker than the first layer. Take a look at the planks and the blue outline. Now admittedly this method doesn't work quite as well in SMP as it does in Classic (due to the different lightning engines) but it is still very noticeable.

Well i only have a front view. I cant really imagine how to do that yet. Is there a video or can you give me an example of how to do that 2 layers trick when we meet ingame?

    *facehoof*

    [block][red1]
    [red2][air]
    [block][red1] [player]

red2 will be darker than red1 because light can't reach it since it's in the shadow of red1.

    Now i get it.
That would certanly help me with the different shades of color.
So im just asking, do i get the zone?

Allright, inform him you gave your agreement to it.

EDIT: Guys i need help to find a suitable location for my pixelart
its going to be about 112 blocks wide, but since i need to dig a really big hole to fit it inside the world, the area around it should be much larger so it fits inside.
