But I had an ancestor that died in the Battle of the Alamo during the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Changed my skin to the Frontiersman in honor of his sacrifice. I'll stop boring y'all with my family pride now.

Yes, Texas was an independent nation, The Republic of Texas, from 1836, to 1845. Only nine years, but even after such a short time, as the only state to formerly be an independent nation it's also the only state legally allowed to fly it's State Flag at the same height as the flag of the United States of America. Everyone else has to fly it lower. Smile

Thank your ancestors for founding the free land that's better-off than its southern neighbors (cough drug wars)

School never taught me of Texas being an independent nation

This is my idea of Texas as an soverign state. The slave owners during the civil war were upset about losing so they all moved to mexico (texas). Mexico was upset about all the people and slaves (slaves were not illegal) and when they started complaining etc. Texas declared independence and the US added them back and made Mexico upset etc. Correct me if I am wrong but that is my understanding...

Fairly close, but in a limited way. Texas joined the union in 1845, the Civil War didn't start unti 16 years later, in 1861. Settlers moved to Texas to keep their slaves, yes. But Texas Declaration of Independence occured not merely because the Mexicans were complaining, but because Mexico both: 1) started legislature to make slavery illegal & 2) unfairly taxed the American settlers. Texas declared it's Independance and won it after a bloody war culminating at the Battle of San Jacinto where a wounded Sam Houston accepted Santa Anna's surrender. Sam Houston went on to be the first of four Presidents to sit on office in the Republic of Texas before it was annexed by treaty into the United States of America. To this day, under the terms of that treaty if the majorit of the population agreed Texas can split into as many as 5 different states, though no move towards doing so have actually ever been attempted.

That'd be F'in' sweet. I don't think my low opinion of O.B.A.M.A is any secret after certain other comments of mine on other threads.
