You ask us which OS you should use, but don't give us any details whatsoever exactly what you want to do with the thing. Serious (non-java) gaming? Image/movie editing? Just some surfing and movie watching? How good are you with computers? Ever used DOS/a console? Do you intend to show the thing off to all your hypothetical hipster friends? Are you planning to put the thing in a network with other computers or a NAS? If so, what are their OSs and HDD formats? Give us some details man! In any case though, W7 Ultimate is a waste of money since the average user will never use most of it's features or these features could be taken over by (free) third-party software. If you want to go the Windows route, I wouldn't go beyond Home Premium since that has all the base necessities without all the bloat.

edit: Also guys... let's not devolve this thread into a hurrdurr apple/windows/linux fanboy thread and give some actual advice for a change.

If you are legally purchasing Windows 7, then there's no reason why you should go for Ultimate, like Filler said, Home Premium is more than enough Smile

I agree on that one. Why needing Ultimate if Home Premium is all you need? Waste of money...

Also I hope that your not planning on dragging that laptop around. 17.3 inch needs a pretty damn large carrying case. If your planning on regularly taking it with you (school?) then I would go for a 15.4inch. If it's for home then you might want to think about getting a regular desktop instead. Those are a whole more bang for your buck and you aren't completely fucked if something breaks. In any case you might want to read around for some reviews if you are serious about getting this. A few years back HP used to be (atleast around these parts) synonym with horrible build quality. Maybe things changed, but you really should look it up before spending so much money.

I use HP, and I can confirm, FillerB, it was a piece of shit.

The only reason it's a decent gaming PC is because I've upgraded the shit out of it so bad the only thing still "stock HP" on it is the casing.

Don't get a laptop; get a real computer. Also, Ubuntu 10.10 and don't update to 11.04, wait for 11.10.

Other than the free, open source software centre with hundreds o high-quality programs and the periodical updates that are actually useful; not much. There is also customisability, it looks pretty good, and doing "pretty much anything" is easier.

Go for Windows 7, it is great and get 8gb ram it makes the game run great. You don't need more than that especially in a laptop... Don't pirate your Os (like someone mentioned).. That is just sad lol. If they do a student version or w/e get that (they do it for office) :O

I have 3k RAM. Game runs kinda-sorta-fine-ish except for that 2,000+ ms spike when the signal hits Washington on it's way to Germany.

Might I suggest [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I think that's much better value. Faster processor, better video card.. and when the hell are you ever gonna need to watch Blu-ray movies on a laptop?

Also, there's more memory slots available in the laptop for when you want to get more. 2x2gb DDR3 1066mhz is in there already.

Edit: And I forgot to add, you're getting this laptop from a reputable dealer (which offers warranties!) instead of ebay.

Edit2: I stand corrected. It also has Blu-ray.

No, ridiculous wages, bonuses and increased production costs are what drives the price up. Piracy has a negligible effect on the price since they are a relatively small amount of the total userbase.

Besides that most of us need these type of software for studies. Take for example graphic designers. Almost all colleges use Photoshop/Premiere as their primary platform. Do you really think that a college kid could afford those, even with student discount?

eh, it's not like we the public aren't getting royally screwed over by some of their ridiculous pricing schemes. Though I agree that pirating an OS is a bit dumb, considering you can in general say bye-bye to any and all forms of updating.

I'm not trying to talk piracy right, because it really isn't, but is doesn't have as much effect on the global economy as you are saying. I take it you also agree with the ridiculous fines the RIAA and their consorts are handing out because they somehow lose 5 bazilion dollars for every Ricky Martin-song the crippled grandmother down the road downloads?
