Oh, you're going to be in Austin! Are you flying in? If so, are you landing in DFW Airport? I'm just a 15 minute drive from there. We should get something to eat while you're passing through. (Austin is three hours from DFW)
Regardless of everything else, if you spend ANY time out of the conventio. You should totally try out [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for some authentic Texas-style BBQ. Their chicken is to die for, and their brisket is pretty damn good too.
Austin is a college town (the main campus of the University of Texas is there) and also a tourist trap. When you stop there you should also ask around to find the bat colony. I THINK they're in season. Several million bats nest under one of the bridges there, and each day at dusk they fly out to hunt. Quite a sight to behold! They literally look like a small cloud over the river, and there's always a group of them that fly around the bridge before heading off.
