Well you would need to pass this by Fillerb, as it isn't your city it is a joint council and it is part of the server 5 city project!

If the whole council is unanimous for the new name and said name is not totally retarded (such as GiygaCity) then I don't see the problem.

Re: The city's new name: ACHERON
Ive been working on an actual construction plan for the city based on the right now mostly favorated layout design i named "sunflower".
The original data is pretty tiny since i used single pixels.
Heres an enlarged version:
And here are my suggestions for the city name:
The City of Nim,
Nimph City,
Mystic,
Mystica,
Rosa Mystica (about this one... im revering to a religious artifact. And since the city might be made in a flower shape, i thought this might be a well fitting name for the overall theme),
Arcania,
Siren City,
Sirenia,
Lumina,
Looming,
Sentrine City.

Nero you maybe wanna make a new topic for the design since this thread is about the names?
As of the names so far I like Helianthus, Arcania and Acheron the most.
If there will be more suggestions go ahead but I want to create a Poll soon so we can decide on a name.

Re: The city's new name: ACHERON
I havent made up my mind about the train station yet. Maybe it could end up on one of the arms? Wer close to the boder right? so why not have the station end at the arm of the city that is closest to the border?
Oh and Giygas. Since wer both very happy about the sunflower concept and it was already favorated by some other players, im already rather focused on this one. Id say we should stick to it. It just works out very well in any way.

Okay now I am angry!
I said give to give me explainations about the names if they mean something!
Now that the person didn't do that, Acheron is disqualified! (Any votes on Acheron will be ignored since I cannot change the poll somehow)

Re: The city's new name: ACHERON
In that case... Heliantus (my contribution) is the genus of many types of sunflowers and comes from helios (sun) and anthos (flower). And while I'm not sure whether or not it is a coincidence: Arcania is the title of the new Gothic-game (Arcania: Gothic 4). Believe it or not but most good catching names are already taking by something or another. Might just want to settle on something not well known (like Kumatora -_-) or at the very least do some namechecking before opening a poll if you care that much.

Re: The city's new name: ACHERON
It's about the meaning of the names, Helianthus wich is Sunflower also fits, well kinda. The shape of the city is flower-like. Arcania.. well i dont care about Gothic.. But Aracnia is like Arcane Magic, wich fits to the theme of the city.
But Acheron, a river from a greek Mythology? Cmon.

Well, it's winning... ^_^ (Also, you should totally have a waterfall and a river in the middle of the forest, that way it'd fit...)

Maybe i simply didnt know?? Calm down^^ For all i remember Acheron was the name of a chaos lord, who probably no one else knows of, so i said hey why not, sounds cool and is not well known.
And on the other hand, Arcania as a name for an arcan-magic themed city, isnt this like calling a water style city "Liquidia" or something? Or calling a dog "barky" or "woofy". Ok that last one is a bit exaggareted but you get what i mean, the name is simply too direct in my opinion

Re: The city's new name: ACHERON
I did read the thread, I'm just making a summary for this to end; Acheron received the most votes, it'd be obvious for it to win. Then again, you don't want it to win, so yeah... Then the big question arises, why would you add the name on the poll if you didn't want it to win?

Re: The city's new name: ACHERON
Obviously you did NOT read the thread. That thing I said was removed in the first post though. The thread was about finding a new name. I added that they have to tell meanings of the names if they have any. Since they haven't put any meanings I thought they dont have any and are just simple names. I liked those 3 the most so I put it up. Filler then said something about that Acheron is a river in greek mythology and that really does not fit the forest and magic theme. So disqualified it.

Re: The city's new name: ACHERON
Hm i may have heard it in relation to Hades before, not sure, but i still wasnt thinking about that when i made the suggest for it. Just thought its a cool name i heard somewhere before. And i still think its better than naming it after the fourth gothic game (which was really awful btw)
Like i said, i simply didnt know. I mean, Arcania is a game title, you also didnt know that before.

For your information, all three proposed names have meanings.
Helianthus is Latin for flower.
Arcania is derived from Arcan, which is Latin for "hidden."

This. Also, it's exceedingly difficult to find names for ANYTHING that haven't already been used or have a meaning. You might as well just use Acheron (and ignore the meaning) since it appears the be the most voted for name.

Every word has an origin and a meaning, if not several.
Unless you just randomly combine words together into some kind of unpronounceable monstrosity like eeceotnotem or whatever.

FillerB wrote:Ek-ke-not-chem. How difficult is that to pronounce?
Unpronounceable in the sense that there is no correct way to say it, since it is made of three Latin words put together and then pronounced the way sounds would work with English letters and alphabet.
Cs in Latin were pronounced with hard K sounds, for example Caesar was actually spoken as what sounds like Kaisar in English spelling.
Basically when you make up new words they have no real pronunciation. It would be like calling it Acherheliocadia and then claiming that you just pronounce it like the parts of those words. Horrible name anyway, hence everyone calling that city Notch's Ass.

Now that you mention it, that could actually be why i still had that name in mind, played the AoC trial last year. Acheron was some ancient fallen empire with wizards and stuff, i remember running around the ruines ingame.
But come to think of it, i have to admit it really DOES sound pretty dire and evil, which is probably why i remembered it, personal taste thing, but now im not sure if it would fit to the overall atmosphere of the city.
