I like to place silent Herobrine-NPCs behind unsuspecting newbies, yes. It, combined with /vanish and /npc move, makes for some hilarious antics and tends to, I quote many a player here, "freak people the fuck out". Brings some life and mystery to otherwise rather bland gameplay. Plus it doesn't actual harm players, unlike the "real" Herobrine Evil NPC that likes to slowly shuffle in every damn hole on the map.
