Why did they think this would be the best way to handle the situation?

Because it works. It took 3 weeks for gamers to do what scientists couldn't do for decades. Don't be hating.

Re: Gamification: It works, Bitches.
It was sort of a three dimensional Tetris. They were supposed to find the most stable way of arrainging pieces attached on a string by folding it around itself.
Took scientests over a decade, still couldn't do it. Submitted the problem to gamers, it was solved in three weeks.
Gamers, as a sub-culture demographic, typically are people with higher-than-average IQs, and are accustomed to thinking outside the box, as well as accepting temporary losses for long term gains. As a result, they are phenominal problem solvers.
It's been proven in military experiments that gamers also make good soldiers, particularly those from competitive gaming. They have honed twitch-reflexes and can IPDE faster than the average person.
And people think it's just a childish hobby...psh.

I see. Pretty neat (although I would urge you to enter an online game of Black Ops and then argue the above average IQ part ).

Re: Gamification: It works, Bitches.
Depends on whether its PC or console. After every game of TF2 people say 'Good game', not sure if I've ever heard that playing blops on Xbox. All you hear on xbox is a bunch of 11 year olds screaming about how they 'pwn noobs'. Ever since I switched from console to PC, I've noticed that people are generally more mature and smarter on the PC. This is, of course, excluding 90% of the minecraft community nowadays. (Wasn't always that way)sieve wrote:I see. Pretty neat (although I would urge you to enter an online game of Black Ops and then argue the above average IQ part ).

Indeed. PC Gamers tend more on the mature side. Probably because it requires more technical know-how than "Plug this into your television and press the power button."

I know yousaid tend but, have you ever played a game of LoL or HoN. That has to be the worst community I have ever seen. And it is a shame because both games are great fun to play (but I prefer LoL).

Now that you mention it, I am a damn good problem solver
At least now we know that we're better than the scientists with their degrees in biochemistry xD

LOL and HON are strategy games and to be good at them you nest to have a brain.. Just because people act like idiots, it doesn't mean that they are

Re: Gamification: It works, Bitches.
Well, seeing as the only gamers who would volunteer for a game of folding proteins with a bunch of chemists would have to be fairly intelligent in the first place, the experiment doesn't necessarily prove that gamers in general are "smarter" in any way. Still cool tho

Stop insulting everything I post based on "American", Pure. It's starting to look like racism, and I will not tolerate it on my forums.
