    For me, at least, it's quite difficult to actually notice when you have PM's at a glance, and quite often I look up to see PM's that I got days ago. Then I feel GUILTY. I think that having something a bit brighter, and noticeable, such as a little red number or something, like this:

    would make it a lot easier to notice and speed up private communication in the forum.

    Use Firefox, I get a bright blue bar telling me the forum gave me a popup, which means I got a PM Razz
