Only if you look at sport games/most shooters. Final Fantasy (atleast the pre-PS2 ones) changed core mechanics in every sequel. Even Pokemon (yes!) changes it some parts of the gameplay every generation.

The only real TF was the classic half life1 mod... I loved the way of rocket jump back there.. reminds me in warsow/quake 3. (Still playing warsow insta sometimes..)
