Help with starting a server

Guys-
I'm starting a bukkit server for my friends and I, and I was wonering if you guys could give me some tips as to what plugins are used, how to set them up, how to promote/demote someone, how to setup gil, how to change colors of the names, and pretty much everything else. Also, I'd happily promote anyone to admin if my server ever goes public.

For a private server, it's easy as hell, you don't care for griefers and shit. Anyways, just download the shit and the mods, it's pretty self explained, IMO. Go and try, just my advice, and when you fail, come ask here. ^_^

I've gotten it to work with someone on my same network, but I haven't tested it with other people. Do they type in my external ip address or is it a website like orcworm.co.uk?

Like with all other game servers i would assume that minecraft runs the same way so you will have to do some port forwarding to get other people outside of your network to play. Smile

Yep, you'll need to forward port 25565, and others will use your external IP to join. You can get a free 'website' to direct the server's IP to here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I assume you have a static IP, because if you don't, you'll get raped by angry players who need a new IP to connect every single day. ^_^

(I'm not sure if you can override that with getting a domain though, but I assume you can't.)

Anyways, unless you buy some sexy domain, they have to type your IP.
