More effective way. If you want it to completely disappear and keep the other hud functions simply download Improved Chat extension/mod. It adds a lot of nice things in chat (use PgUp to scroll up the chat) and it also has a feature to hide the chat box.
Google it and look into the commands, you'll see.

It dramaticly improves FPS rate for not so good PC's. It helped me to bits!
