Test Scores
I had a pre-screening exam today for a position as an apprentice electritian. It focused heavily on algebra and geometry. I found it easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy, but apparently some others didn't. The lady said I scored in the 98th percentile. Or is it 2nd? Bah, her words were "You scored higher than 98% of the other applicants we receive." So, anyway, job's in the bag an' all. Thanks for the well wishes, folks.

Re: Test Scores
But out of interest: what kind of algebra/geometry-questions did you get? I haven't had to seriously use what I learned in highschool for several years so I'm wondering if I still "got" it.

Re: Test Scores
find the area of a cone 10" tall with a base radius of 3".
Find the are of a triangular prism 11" long, with an isosceles triangle base. The only measurements it showed for the base was the hypotenuse (5") and the line from the other poi t to the middle of the hypotenuse (3").
Solve for x: -12x^2 = 75y-7 when y^2= 4(y+9).

Blurgh wouldn't be able to shake the answers out of my sleeve. With some reading I doubt I would have much trouble with it, but here and now? As Grin said: remembering the equations is key.

Re: Test Scores
So you're saying, is that all I have to do to get a job when I grow up is answer 3 math problems?

No, those were only 3 examples of what he needed to know for ONE job... >.> To get a job when you grow up, just work hard on college.

Fixed that up for you there Pete.
But really, you can get a job when you grow up, getting a well paid job is the hard part. That requires school.
Sure you can work your way up, but with 4 years of university, the level (pay wise) you just attained throughout your entire career (as an entry level employee) will be what you start at leaving university.

1)find the area of a cone 10" tall with a base radius of 3".
V = (1/3)(PI)r2h
V = (1/3)(PI)(3*2*10)
V = (1/3)(PI)(60")
V = (1/3)(3.141592)(60")
V = 62.83"
2) Find the volume of a triangular prism 11" long, with an isosceles triangle base. The only measurements it showed for the base was the hypotenuse (5") and the line from the other poi t to the middle of the hypotenuse (3").
Black figures were given. Red figures were derived from the information given. I'm sure you can do the rest from here.
3) Algebra? No, I'll let you do that. Everything you need is there.
