basically I took control of a network of computers that I had infected in order to create an automated stream of data from all the machines implicated, and directed it at a particular location e.g. the server, overloaded it and made it lag out repeatedly until it crashed

DDOS is a method of lagging out servers by repeatedly sending empty or blank packets of information to the server. The server has to process all incoming data, and then decides what to do with it, regardless of what it is. So if 20k computers send blank messages constantly for any period of time, it will crash the server as the server does not have the bandwidth to handle off the trash information coming in, or it doesn't have the processing power to process it all.
DDOS stands for Distributed Denial of Service. The idea is that people that plant spyware on your computer can make your computer send these packets at any time. People who have this crap on their computer then become part of that hackers "bot net".
Just think of it like trying to find useful email and reply to it if you get 400k spam emails every day but gotta open them all to see what they are because they have no subject line.
On a side note:
If he was DDoSing the server, the server would not have been lagging, it would have crashed. he would also not have been able to abuse the DDOS in game to his own benefit, as he would also have been lagging.

Confirmed for having no idea what a DDoS attack does. If there are enough packets being sent per second the server will just flop on it's ass. Basically if there's more data being sent than your network pipe can handle - similar to what we had yesterday when I pretty much DoS'd myself by transferring backup data from the old server to the new one.
